What Does it Mean to Hire a Difference-Making Speaker?
One of the principles behind the launch of The Aaron Agency was a desire to work with speakers and trainers who are “difference-makers.” You might have noticed that phrase appears several times on my website. But what does it actually mean?
Believe it or not, it isn’t just empty marketing fluff. I have many years of experience, and have worked with hundreds of speakers. Along the way, I learned there are a select few who give you something more than an entertaining presentation. They provide real value that goes beyond a good time and a standing ovation.
Here are a few of the things I look for in a speaker trainer I would consider to be a difference-maker…
Ideas That Work in the Real World
I’ve seen hundreds of presentations from people I like and admire that were full of advice that didn’t seem all that applicable to real-world situations. They were entertaining and engaging, but ultimately left the audience without any new skills or ideas.
For the money it takes to hire a strong keynote speaker, I believe you should walk away with a few insights you can use to save time or make money. Jokes and stories are fun, but they don’t help anyone grow in their career.
For a motivational speaker to be a difference-maker it isn’t enough to simply have good information; they also need to present it in a way that’s easy to understand and act upon. In other words, it’s not just about data and research, but also how the results get put to work.
Without actionable advice a keynote speaker is really talking at your audience instead of to them. That’s a big difference, and one no meeting planner should overlook.
Lasting Changes in Behaviors or Outcomes
If your motivational speaker has been forgotten by the time your attendees have left the conference or event then what did you really get for your money?
I’ve seen firsthand that the right personality can actually inspire salespeople to hit higher quotas, customer service teams to work more efficiently, and leaders to improve the profitability of their departments. Ultimately, these are the kinds of outcomes I want my speakers to be judged on – and the measuring stick you should use when finding the right person to present to your group.
